Well, not quite...but they feel like new.
I came home to a lovely brown package on my doorstep and immediately was as giddy as a girl on Christmas! My Newtons arrived! And of course I had to test them out right away. Be prepared for a lot of exclamation points! I warned you! ;)
Last week the folks at Newton Running contacted me about trying out their shoes. Since I've been stalking their website (i.e. THIS post) for a while trying to learn more about midfoot/forefoot running, it was a perfect opportunity to see what their technology is all about. Fast forward to today and here I am wearing my brand new size seven Newton Lady Isaac trainers. They are neon green, orange and white! They're wicked comfortable! They fit my banana feet! AND they work with my custom orthotics! Wins all around. :)
One of the main reasons why Newton shoes interested me so much was because they are specifically designed for a midfoot/forefoot running gait. It seems that most running shoes focus on heel cushioning and gel support, and the Newton line looked like a great idea for a forefoot runner like me. I mean, check out the wear pattern on my old Asics:
Most of the wear is on the front, while the heel looks practically new.
This is what the Newton site says about the Lady Isaacs:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The newest addition to the Newton family offers intelligent control for all foot types. The Isaac is a neutral guidance trainer designed for runners committed to improving their running form to the more efficient midfoot/forefoot running style.
How does the Guidance Trainer differ from the Performance Trainer?"
- Beveled Heel and Toe: helps guide runner easily into the midfoot/forefoot
- Beveled Lugs: smoother, stable feel that is more gradual in the forefoot
- Wider midfoot/forefoot and lugs: adds stability and creates a softer feel
- Midfoot Chassis/Shank: adds support and stability
- Carbon Rubber Outersole: increases durability
- Closed Mesh on Upper: keeps small debris out
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are my initial first impressions:- Very lightweight, adequate padding around the ankle
- Shoe felt like a slipper, not bulky at all; soft material
- Walking around on my hardwood floor felt a little "funny"--like it would if I was wearing this type of shoe:
- Immediately felt like my strides were more powerful and that I was "propelled" forward
- I concentrated on the Land-Lever-Lift running technique Newton Running describes
- Noticed that the ball of my foot felt like it was getting a real workout (just like back in my ballet days)
- Even though I went out with pretty much the same amount of effort as any other run, my pace was incredible! 8:07 pace for 2.6 miles for my hilly neighborhood.
- Since I have to break in the shoes and get used to the way they work, Newton recommends slowly increasing mileage with the shoe...and I can agree. After only 2.6 miles my feet are tired. Not necessarily sore yet, but just fatigued. I'm using some different muscles!
- I felt like I had a brand new set of legs, and not running shoes.
See the actuator lugs?
Lookin' & feelin' great!
Notice the awesome neon green laces?? (I thought of you, Katye!)

Many thanks to the people of Newton for providing me with this awesome pair of shoes. :)

Whoa!! That sounds awesome! Just what you needed, a shoe to make you run even FASTER! =)
ReplyDeletei may have to look into this shoe, my mid soul on my running shoes gets worn down first too!
Lt. Dan, you got new legs...! Have fun with your magic legs... I wonder though how your custom orthtics are going to work when you decide to give barefoot running a try...
ReplyDeleteAwesome that you get to try out the Newtons. Have fun.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them so far! I think my mistake was I ran too far too soon in them. Although I didn't think it would be a problem since I've been wearing their other shoe for 2 years now and those actuators are more pronounced than on the Isaacs. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteNow you have me interested. I never considered myself to be a mid to forefoot runner, but my wear pattern is very similar to yours. interesting ...
ReplyDeletekeep me updated on how you like them. I'm still searching for my perfect shoe ...
oh, and they are super cute!
Those are sweeeeet!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how much faster they made you feel! You make me want to go out and try them!
ReplyDeleteThey sound fantastic! Interesting concept - nice to have shoes catered to the way you run. Yay!
ReplyDeleteThese shoes totally weird me out, but it sounds like they are a good fir for you. The wear pattern on your old shoes is pretty much the opposite of mine. :)
ReplyDeleteHave fun adjusting to your new legs!
Those sound perfect for you! And they look sweet-I think the green and orange will help you look faster hehe
ReplyDeleteDidn't I tell you to take it easy the first time out?
ReplyDeleteYes, your calves will hate you during that break in period, but then your legs will get used to them. I use Newtons for most of my shorter, faster races (1/2 marathons and below).
@Neil - nice Gump reference.
Oooo they are so shiney and new! Can't wait to hear more about them as you break them in!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear how they hold up after a few runs. I also have a midfoot strike. I may have to check them out myself.
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are soooo Zoe! Hope they work out for miles and miles of FAST running buddy..
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can teach me to run so mine will work??
I'll be watching intently. I'm very interested in these shoes. I have dropped all kinds of time since becoming more of a midfoot striker. My problem is as Iget tired, I lengthen out and become a hell striker again.I'm looking for something that rewards me for keeping a midfoot strike and punishes (well, at least disouorages) heel strike. Thanks for your initial impressions Zoe!
ReplyDeleteThose look awesome and I'm in love with the colors!!
ReplyDeleteI think I want some lighter shoes for when it gets warmer. I will have to look into these.
Hahah love the laces Zoe! I've been wanting to try them and I the running store me is having a specailist come in this weekend to do a demo and they said some people can even take them for a test run for a few miles around the store. ME! ME! ME! *waves hand in air*. I would really like to try them out thanks for the review...keep us updated!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking to those. They're going to be at the MGM in a few weeks. I'll have to try them then.
ReplyDeleteWow...cute shoes! You gotta love 'em if they make you run faster! Remember when you were a kid and got new shoes and claimed that they made you run so much faster ;) Well, now it may be true!
ReplyDeleteThose are some cute shoes! I'm a heel striker so I've pretty much ruled out ever getting Newtons but I'm glad they work so well for you. Enjoy your new shoes and your faster times.
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I had read about Newton's last year after my second round of stress fractures when it became quite apparent that I was a heel striker. I just can't seem to find a store around me that sells them so that I can feel them on my feet before spending money on them! Would you still need your orthotics with them? Also, how do your calves feel? Awesome that you like them so much :)
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are sweet!! I need a neutral shoe but I am seriously jealous! I wonder if they would work for me! I'll have to stalk their website!! :)
ReplyDeleteGood review, Zoe. I am a forefoot runner and lightweight so it does sound like these would work for me. When I went shoe shopping a few weeks ago, I looked for Newton's but didn't see them at our local running store. Somehow, I don't think they've hit the Canadian shelves yet. Now I know to keep looking.
ReplyDeletenice pair of newtons! I havent tried a pair though but this sure looks good...
